The
Howard Fenner Scholarship Committee (HFSC) assembles each year to select
students who are children of members of the CTA and demonstrate a
genuine need for financial assistance. The scholarships are outright
grants.
The
HFSC was impressed with the number and quality of applications this
year. Thirty-three students
applied for
assistance - the highest number of
applicants in the
history of the program! The need for scholarship
assistance is great in these times of rising education
costs. Thanks to all AR’s and school counselors who assisted in this
program. The applications
reflected a wide variety of college choices across the country,
including Yale, Georgia Institute of Technology, California Institute
for the Arts, Howard University, Auburn, as well as our Florida colleges
such as UF, FSU, UCF, USF, UNF, FAMU, and Florida Atlantic. It was encouraging to
see so many students aspiring to achieve great things. Some will be our
future doctors, pediatricians, orthodontists, and neo-natal nurses.
Other students will become teachers, engineers, journalists, and
broadcasters. Many will seek marketing degrees as they want to run
their own businesses such as fashion merchandising, event-planning and
music production.
The
scholarship committee spent hours reading and scoring each application.
They met on March 6th to rank all the applications. CTA was
able to increase the funding for scholarships this year, so every
eligible student was able to receive some assistance. The HFSC Chair,
Rebecca Reitzel says Kudos to this year’s committee members: Helen
Greene, Olympia Williams-White, Suzanne McDougald, Candace Vaden,
Claudia Good, Doris Jackson and Rebecca Reitzel. Thanks also to Judy
Siklosi for her valuable assistance!
The scholarships will be
presented to students
at the May 12th
Board of Director’s meeting at the CTA office. We hope you can
attend to see all of the winners. We wish them the best in their future
endeavors.
